Cold Spring School: Cornhusk Dolls

2006–2007 K/1 Students

Native Americans, who began cultivating corn over 1,000 years ago, discovered that the brittle husks could be softened in water and fashioned into toys for their children. During European colonization, Native Americans taught the early colonists their indigenous agricultural practices and the craft of making cornhusk dolls and toys.

Children in the K/1 classrooms fashioned their own dolls out of cornhusks and then personalized them with the addition of fabric, yarn, sequins and buttons.
