Preschool News

The preschoolers celebrated Chinese New Year with the help of Octavio's family. Mary and Octavio's PoPo showed the children how to make steamed dumplings and noodles. The children especially liked using the machine that pressed the dough really flat. The students also decorated the classroom with Chinese lanterns. and learned how to write in Chinese. Thank you Mary and PoPo.

K/1 Class News

Laura & Maryanne's class has been very busy during the last few weeks! The students visited the planetarium at Southern CT State University and learned about the sun, the planets and their moons, and the constellations. Each child made a drawing of things he or she found most interesting, and then put them together in a book.

The class celebrated the 100th day of school with many activities. They included bringing in collections of 100 items, writing 100 words, guessing the number of items in estimation jars and then counting the items in different ways. The class also sat in silence for 100 seconds, and built a sculpture with 100 marshmallows! Figuring out how many marshmallows each student would be able to put on was almost as most fun as making the sculpture! (14 students x 7 marshmallows = 98. The two teachers each added 1!)

Thanks to our hosts, Aisling Colón and Jonathan Holloway, the class visited the Calhoun College community at Yale University. The class was treated to a tour of the grounds including the newly renovated basement. The highlight of the trip was having lunch in the dining hall with students and staff. Thank you very much!

Art Studio News

There are three new exhibits. The 6th Grade students have relief sculptures in the front hall. The shapes are cut out of tarpaper, painted on both sides and mounted in relief on white oak tag. In the hallway on the way to Brianna and Amy's K/1 classroom there is an exhibit by their class of three-dimensional sculptures of some Cold Spring community members. On the board outside Brianna and Amy's room is an exhibit of numbers and letters using pattern and color.

Thank you to everyone for all the contributions of items for the upcoming auction projects that have been received so far.
