These pretty pink flowers also taste delicious. Just pull off one of the pink parts of the flower, bite it, and it tastes like honey!

 

 Plantain

These leafy plants send up spikes of seeds that look like candles. It is a common plant that you might find growing as a weed in your garden. Rabbits enjoy eating the leaves, while birds enjoy the seeds.

 

 Autumn Olive

This plant grows wild all over New England.

 

 Common Mullen

The leaves are soft and velvety. The Native Americans used this plant as bandages for wounds. The Romans dipped the leaves in grease and used them for torches. Native Americans and colonists used the leaves to line their shoes to protect their feet from cold weather. The leaves were also boiled to make a tea that was used to cure earaches.

 

Pussy Willow

The pussy willow has soft green leaves. These are great plants to stop erosion. They usually drink up lots of water. If planted, all fifty kinds of this plant will stretch their roots to water. In the spring, the female and male plants has a small yellow flower. The male's flower is more showy than the female's.

 Yarrow

This plant has a white flower and a pleasant smell. It was used to break a fever, treat bleeding, a to cure a rash. The Native Americans used it to make a tea that would take care of a bad stomach ache.

 

Sumac

In the fall these berries turn red. The stems are thick and contain a white milky sap. The birds will wait until winter to eat the red berries when the snow falls and other food is scarce.

 

Wild Rose

The fruit of this plant is rich in vitamin C and is often made into a jelly or a tea.

 Curly Dock

The Curly Dock was introduced from Europe and has a bitter, lemony taste. The plant begins the summer green as you see in the picture, but soon turns red and finally brown. It spends more of the summer brown. The winds of the fall and winter detach its heart-shaped seeds.

 

 Yellow Flag Iris

This beautiful plant was originally from Europe. It was carried off and brought to America.

 

 Lily Pads

Lily pads have a long stem so the leaves can float. This way they get plenty of sunshine, even when the water is murky.

 Forget-Me-Nots

These delicate flowers are bright and colorful. You'll remember how pretty they look!

 

 Crown Vetch

This plant is native to Europe. It helps to put nitrogen into the soil. This is good for other plants because nitrogen is a fertilizer. The plant and roots are thick so it also helps with erosion.
