Scuds

This scud is turning orange because it's near death or unhealthy. When scuds are gray then they are healthy. Scud's eyes are very sensitive to light. They try to stay in dark places during the day like under rocks. During the night they are very active.  Scuds eat pieces of dead animals and plants. They grow up to 25mm but we found mostly small ones at our location. Scuds are classified as crustaceans. They have a hard outer shell. A lot of us think that they look a lot like baby shrimp.

They are side swimmers. This means that they swim in a sideways manner.  They breath with gills. The gills are located just behind the legs.
