Finally!!! We found a Hellgrammite! A very scary creature to find, but a solid indicator of very good water quality! We were very excited. Hellgrammites are just about the only critter living in the water that you have to worry about getting pinched. He has nasty pinchers on his head. We named him Jaws and we are writing a story about him. We kept him in a tank for a while. He ate all the other critters and then we let him go. |

We found both net-spinning caddisflies and home-building caddisflies. This is a picture of what they look like as adults. People confuse them with dragonflies, but they have only one set of wings. |

This is an Earwig. They seem to like moist places. You can often find them in your garden during the summer. |

This is a home-building caddisfly. You can just see his head is peeking out waiting to snatch up some food brought over by the current. He built this home from little pebbles from the river bed. They can also use sticks or whatever materials the river holds. |
