Long Island Sound

Long Island Sound is often called the " Urban Sea" because there are many cities along its shores. It is 110 miles long and 21 miles wide. The widest point is near the Connecticut River. With a mix of fresh and salt water, it offers a habitat for animals that live nowhere else. Long Island Sound's watershed reaches into five states and a part of Canada. The sound's plants and animals health has been an area of concern. But this can be helped. If everyone would use common sense and practice recycling, we could save the sound.
Around 18,000 years ago, Connecticut and Long Island were covered by a sheet of thick ice. Scientists estimate it to be about 1,000 meters thick. We wanted to be able to imagine how deep under the ice our school would be. We created a scale model of it here. Scroll down under this cut-away of the glacier to see our school.
